The training is paid for by the Welsh Assembly Government so you won’t have to pay for it. All you have to pay is the wage. There is no fixed salary for an Apprentice - the salary should reflect their skills, age and ability. You’ll also have to allow the Apprentice time to complete their training, both on and off the job.

So long as they are motivated, willing to learn and willing to work hard, anyone can become an Apprentice. There are no age restrictions and any company in Wales can take part.
An existing employee can also become an Apprentice - you don’t have to employ someone new.
Your local College will provide you with information about people who are interested in becoming an Apprentice. Call 0845 345 1041 to find out more.
Apprenticeships are available at craft, technician and management level in pretty much every industry you can think of – from Accountancy to Motor Vehicle Repair.
For more information telephone 0845 345 1041 and ask to speak to a work-place training co-ordinator.

Yes you do. An Apprentice can be trained to do the job you want them to do – to industry-recognised standards – so the skills they’ll learn will directly benefit your business. The training package will be developed in discussion with you and delivered in a way that will best suit your business.

No, the College will do that. You provide the hands-on work experience, a safe working environment and time for the Apprentice to learn their trade. The College will do the rest for you. They will manage the training, the assessments and the ongoing support for the trainee.

The specific qualifications gained will depend on the Apprenticeship scheme being followed. An Apprentice will usually achieve an NVQ, Key Skills and a technical job-related certificate.
The level of the qualification depends on the type of Apprenticeship scheme being followed. Foundation Modern Apprentices gain qualifications at Level 2 (GCSE level), Modern Apprentices get qualifications at Level 3 (the same level as A Levels or BTEC Diplomas) and trainees doing a Modern Skills Diploma will get university level qualifications like an HNC.

The time taken depends on the type of Apprenticeship scheme being followed - Foundation Modern Apprenticeship, Modern Apprenticeship or Modern Skills Diploma - and the dedication of the Apprentice.
An Apprenticeship could be completed in a year but it usually takes between 2 and 3 years. The College will be able to tell you the exact amount of time allocated to the Apprenticeship you are interested in.

Initially, when signing up the Apprentice, you will have to complete some paperwork and so will the Apprentice. The College will take responsibility for the training and assessment paperwork after that.
There will be regular reviews between the College, yourself and the trainee, usually about every two months. Update reports from these reviews will be sent to you.

You could recruit an Apprentice yourself but the easiest way to find one is to call your local College on 0845 345 1041. You’ll be put through to a work-based training co-ordinator who’ll have lists of suitable candidates.
